Profound Raises $180 Million Series D

Bloomberg reported this morning that Profound, the New York company that tracks how brands show up in AI answers, has closed a $180 million Series D. The round values the company at $1.8 billion post-money and was led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins.

As always, every number here carries a label: Verified (reported by a named outlet or filing), Claimed (stated by the company or its investors), or Inferred (our arithmetic, nothing more).

What was reported

The round is $180 million at a $1.8 billion post-money valuation, led by Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins, and it takes Profound's total funding past $335 million. All of this is Verified, from the Bloomberg report of 15 September 2026.

That's the whole disclosure so far. As of this afternoon there is no word on other participants, what the money is for, or any updated customer or revenue figures. We print that as the finding rather than fill it in with guesses.

Two things worth noticing

The pace, first. Profound closed its Series C in February this year: $96 million at a $1 billion valuation (Verified, Fortune, 24 February 2026). Seven months later the price has nearly doubled.

And who led. Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins are not new money. Sequoia led the Series B, Kleiner led the Series A, and both have been in every round since. When insiders lead at a higher price, the people closest to the company's numbers are choosing to pay more instead of letting an outsider set the price. That tells you something about their conviction. It tells you nothing about whether the product measures what it says it measures.

The question the money does not answer

Everything Profound sells rests on one activity: sending large volumes of prompts to AI engines and measuring what comes back. So the value of the output depends on where those prompts come from and how closely they resemble what real people actually type.

Today's report is silent on that. Prompt source, prompt count, refresh cadence, whether any real-user data is involved: nothing. This is not unusual. Across the category, funding announcements name investors in detail and prompts not at all. We record it as a finding, and it is the subject of the research paper we have in preparation on the prompt problem.
